Is Your Life Filled With Purpose?

All of us need meaning in our lives. We need something to add value and purpose to, so it doesn’t feel like we have wasted our time here. However, adding purpose and meaning is not something we have been taught in our childhood.

We often feel confused about finding purpose and meaning. But there is no need to worry – if you want to live a life filled with purpose, you are in the right place. 🙂

Here are some steps you can take to move in that direction.

Commit To Yourself

To find anything in life, you need to commit to that goal. Keep in mind that you will not be committed unless you can answer these questions:

  • Is finding your purpose and meaning a priority for you?
  • Are you willing to go out of your comfort zone to find your purpose?
  • Are you willing to dedicate time and effort to find your purpose?
  • Are you willing to go into uncertain territory?

These are the top four questions you will have to answer to understand your commitment to your goal. Of course, many of us don’t want uncertainty, and we are not willing to go out of our comfort zone. But, unless you do these things, it will be tough to find your purpose.

Explore Your Purpose

Once you commit to the goal, you have to start taking action to explore your purpose. Keep in mind that achieving anything requires two things: intention and action. Committing to yourself is the intention, and exploring is action.

Here are a few ways you can start taking action to explore your purpose:

1. Create a List Of Meaningful Things

We all have certain things we find meaning in. The first thing you should do is make a list of meaningful things for you to explore your purpose. Some examples include:

  • Helping people with their mental health
  • Caring for animals
  • Traveling to provide aid to under-developed countries
  • Helping seniors with their fitness and health
  • Helping people through art
  • Cooking meals for people in need

These are just some examples. Your list of meaningful things will look different and be personal to you. You can put anything on the list that interests you or brings you joy. It has to be something you truly care about. Be honest and list things you find joy and real meaning in.

2. Shorten the List

It is not humanly possible to do everything on your list at a time. That is why you should shortlist your meaningful things list. Only keep the most meaningful items.

It can be something you have wanted to do for a long time but haven’t yet. Keep things that speak the most to you, and you feel would add the most meaning to your life. Shorten to at most three to five items.

3. Choose One To Start With

Once you have created your list, it is time to choose one thing from it. That is because you will need to focus your energy and time on one thing in the beginning. Then, after some time, you can start doing the other things on the list.

So, let your intuition choose the one you want to start with. If you can’t decide, you can randomly choose or ask a family member or close friend. After deciding, it is time to start working on your choice.

4. Give It Two Weeks

To test if your top choice brings you joy or meaning, you need to give it two weeks. For example, if you want to help people by cooking meals for them, do it for two weeks. You can make hot meals for your local shelter or soup kitchen to help people in need.

Pour yourself into this and see how it makes you feel. If it brings you immense joy and meaning, it might be the purpose you have been looking for all your life.

5. Continue Exploring

If you loved doing your top choice for two weeks, you can extend it for a month and continue exploring. If somewhere along the line, it stops bringing you joy, you can do the next thing on your list. First, do it for two weeks and then repeat the same process as above.

Continue to explore like this till you find something that resonates with you the most. Keep in mind that you might want to avoid this process, but you shouldn’t.

Living A Life That Brings You Joy

The key to living a life that brings you joy is to enjoy the little things. For someone that might be cooking, listening to music, dancing, or anything else. To you, it may look like something else.

Whatever it is that brings you the most joy should be the most significant component of your life. After all, we can only live a life of meaning if we feel happy about it. However, here are some simple things to always uplift yourself and find meaning in:

  • Indulging in self-care
  • Spending time with your support system
  • Appreciating the little things such as the color of the sky
  • Serving others in any way you can
  • Smiling at everyone that crosses your path

These are small but significant things that can have an impact on your perspective and mood. So, while you are on this path, don’t forget to appreciate the little things.
