This one is personal for me.
For years I ate plenty of protein and was not getting the benefit of it, because my body was not breaking it down. I had no idea that was even possible. Once I understood it, it changed how I look at all of this. I start with digestion now, before the plate.
Because protein only counts once your body breaks it down and absorbs it.
I did not learn that from a textbook. I learned it from my own results, and then from seeing the same pattern turn up again and again in other people’s.
What usually turns up on a gut test
The most common finding is not one missing nutrient. It is food passing through without being fully broken down, and rarely only protein. Fats and vegetables too.
That is not simply missed nutrition. Undigested protein and fat can ferment and putrefy in ways that favour less helpful bacteria, and that makes digestion harder still. The problem compounds quietly.
It was never only about protein
Absorption is the gate everything passes through. When breakdown is poor, it is not one nutrient going missing. It is whatever depended on that step.
Protein gives you more than muscle. Your hormones, your enzymes, the chemicals that regulate mood and sleep, your immune proteins, and the collagen in your skin, joints and bone are all built from amino acids. When protein is not being broken down properly, all of those are working from a shorter supply.
Fat digestion carries its own set. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble, meaning they need fat to be absorbed alongside them. If fat digestion is struggling, those four are affected regardless of how much you eat or supplement. Your body also builds steroid hormones from fats and cholesterol.
Vegetables have to be physically broken down before they give anything up. Their nutrients sit inside plant cell walls built from fibre your body cannot digest, so chewing and cooking are what release the carotenoids, folate and vitamin K held inside. Undigested vegetable matter showing up on a test means most of that passed through with it. And the carotenoids that become vitamin A need fat alongside them to be absorbed, which ties them straight back to fat digestion.
Minerals depend heavily on stomach acid. Iron, zinc, calcium and magnesium all need an acidic environment to be freed from food and taken up, which is why mineral deficiencies often arrive in clusters rather than one at a time.
The B vitamins sit behind energy production, nerve function and mood, with B12 in particular requiring a specific process in the stomach that depends on adequate acid.
Supplements go through the same gate. A well-chosen multivitamin still has to be broken down and absorbed. Plenty of women take good supplements faithfully and see very little change, and poor absorption is one of the more common reasons.
Which is why this rarely presents as one clean problem. It shows up as several unrelated-seeming things at once, and nobody connects them.
None of this happens to everyone, and it does not happen all at once. The genuinely encouraging part is that absorption tends to respond well once someone identifies what is actually going on, and often faster than people expect.
Why you would not necessarily know
You might reasonably assume that if your digestion were struggling, you would feel it.
That assumption is worth questioning. Poor breakdown does not always announce itself with bloating or discomfort. Plenty of people absorb badly with no obvious digestive symptoms at all, and what they notice instead is the fatigue, or the hair, or the labs that keep coming back low no matter what they take.
From the outside, the plate looks fine. What happens after it is invisible without looking.
This is where general advice runs out
Poor absorption is not one problem with one fix.
It might be low stomach acid, which means protein never gets properly unpacked before it moves on. It might be insufficient enzyme output from the pancreas, which is a different mechanism entirely. It might be an imbalance in gut bacteria, or irritation in the gut lining affecting the surface where absorption actually happens.
Those four call for genuinely different work. Supporting stomach acid does very little if the issue is the lining, and enzyme support will not resolve a bacterial imbalance.
There is one clue you can notice yourself. If a protein-heavy meal leaves you feeling heavy and full for hours afterwards, longer than the meal seems to warrant, that leans toward the acid and enzyme side rather than the lining. It is a hint, not an answer, and it is the sort of detail that shapes where I look first.
From the inside, these four feel the same, or feel like nothing at all. On testing they look completely different, and that distinction is what turns years of guessing into a plan.
Two things worth doing tonight
Chew properly. This sounds trivial and it is not. Chewing breaks food into smaller pieces so enzymes have more surface to work on, and it matters most for vegetables, whose nutrients stay locked inside the plant cell until the wall is broken. The act of chewing also signals your stomach to produce acid and your pancreas to ready its enzymes. Swallowing food half-chewed skips that signal. It helps everyone, though it will not compensate if the underlying capacity is genuinely short.
Eat in a settled state. Digestion runs on the rest-and-recover branch of your nervous system. Eating at your desk, in the car, or between calls means less stomach acid, fewer enzymes, and slower transit. The same meal eaten sitting down, unhurried, is genuinely better digested.
Neither requires buying anything, and for some people they make a noticeable difference within weeks.
What shifts as we get older
Digestive capacity varies enormously between people. Stomach acid and enzyme output differ from one person to the next, which is why two people can eat the same chicken breast and end up with very different amounts of usable protein.
Muscle also becomes less responsive to protein as we age. Researchers call this anabolic resistance. The amount that used to send a clear signal to build and hold muscle stops being quite enough, and it develops gradually, becoming more pronounced in later decades. Nothing is broken. Your body needs more of the same input to get the same result.
Protein at every meal matters for a practical reason. Most people go light at breakfast and load up at dinner, which makes an adequate daily total hard to reach. A palm-sized serving at each meal is the simplest route there, and breakfast is nearly always where it goes missing.
One habit I use myself: every five or six months I check in on whether I am eating enough and how I feel. No daily tracking. It catches the quiet slide before it turns into anything.
Where I would start
Muscle is your metabolic engine and your resilience for the decades ahead, and protecting what you have is far easier than rebuilding it later.
How much protein you need comes down to you. Your body weight, your activity, how well you digest, and whether protein is even the missing piece at all.
The good news is that this is very workable once you can see it. And the first step is not more food, or more supplements. It is knowing whether you are breaking down and absorbing what is already on your plate.
